Since commencing golf charters in 2008, over 25,000 golfers have used us as their preferred airline charter service to transport them from Victoria to Tasmania.


A family owned and operated business, the Tucker’s have been involved in aviation for over 40 years. Established as Promair in the late 80’s and later formed into Tasfast Airfreight to provide an overnight freight service between Tasmania and the mainland. In 2004 driven by an increase in demand for passenger charter, Vortex Air was born and operated for many years before it’s rebrand to Southern Airlines. Southern Airlines now flies upwards of 4000 passengers per annum, with a 100% accident-free safety record.

Southern Airlines only employ and train the best. Through our freight arm Tasfast Airfreight; we are able to prepare our pilots for all flying conditions and situations. They are then able gain the many hours needed as pilot-in-command before we allow them to command our passenger aircraft.


Bass Strait Golf utilises the Super King Air and Beechcraft 1900, both of which are corporate twin-turbine pressurised aircraft, suitable for up to 19 passengers and capable of flying 500kmph.

What's the difference between Air Charter & a Commercial Airline?

Air charter is the business of renting an entire aircraft i.e., chartering) as opposed to individual aircraft seats (i.e., purchasing a ticket through a traditional airline). While the airlines specialise in selling transportation by the seat, Southern Airlines focus on individual private aircraft and itineraries, urgent or time-sensitive cargo, air ambulance and any other form of ad hoc air transportation.

Do I have to pay for Car Parking & is it Secure?

Moorabbin Airport is a security controlled airport, and Southern Airlines provide Free Car parking out the front of our building.

How much luggage can I take?

Each passenger is limited to 18kg per person. This includes 1 x overnight bag and 1 x golf bag. Please note – this may vary depending on the number of passengers and desired destination. Please enquire for an exact amount.

Are meals included with any of the Packages?
No, meals are generally not included in your Bass Strait Golf charter package. However if you opt to choose the Luxury Bass Strait Triangle it is all-inclusive and meals will be provided.
How big is the Aircraft?

Southern Airlines operate a 9 seater Super King Air and a 19 seater Beechcraft 1900 for passenger charters.

Does the Aircraft have 2 engines?

All aircraft in operation with Southern Airlines have 2 engines.

Will there be 2 Pilots flying the Aircraft?

When flying with Southern Airlines, you will only have 2 pilots on the Beechcraft 1900. All other aircraft will have one pilot in-command.

How experienced is the Pilot?

Southern Airlines Pilots are trained in-house and are matured through our sister company Tasfast. They fly our multi-engine freighters day and night in all weather conditions. Only then will they be checked to line to fly our passenger charters.

How early do i need to check-in?

45 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time. Please note: the lounge may not be open if you arrive over an hour early.
